Rochas Okorocha, a presidential hopeful and former governor of Imo State, has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja for an alleged N2.9 billion fraud.

Justice Inyang Ekwo granted him bail in the amount of N500 million and a surety in the same amount on Tuesday.
The order was issued by Justice Inyang Ekwo, who was ruling on Okorocha’s bail plea. Okorocha currently represents the Imo West senatorial district in the National Assembly.

He stipulated that the surety must be a responsible citizen with landed property worth at least as much as the presidential candidate’s bail.

The judge also ordered Okorocha to submit his international passport with the court’s registry and not to travel outside the court’s jurisdiction without permission.

He also directed the court registry to notify the Nigeria Immigration Service that Okorocha’s international passport was in their possession.

The former governor, on the other hand, was ordered to remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until his bail conditions were met, according to Justice Ekwo.

The judge also granted bail to Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Okorocha’s co-defendant, under the same terms as the EFCC’s previous administrative bail.

Okorocha’s lawyer, Okey Amaechi, told the court that his client was willing to comply with the bail requirements.

The trial is set to begin on November 7th.
