The ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR) effort was originally scheduled to come to a close at the end of June 2022, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally agreed to prolong it until further notice.

The disclosure was made by the Honorable Aishatu Jibril Dukku, Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on Electoral Matters, while briefing other members on the efforts being made by the committee to ensure the implementation of a House resolution that was reached the previous week.

She reported to the members of the House during plenary on Wednesday that the Committee had met with INEC the previous day (Tuesday) and that they had agreed to prolong the CVR and that all of their resolutions had been accepted.

The Nigerian House of Representatives requested that the deadline for continuous voter registration be extended by an additional sixty days, starting on June 30, 2022, in order to allow for the registration of a greater number of Nigerian citizens.

In addition, in order to accomplish this goal, the House of Representatives urged the Commission to disperse extra personnel and voter registration equipment throughout the country.

Through a resolution, the chairman of the House Committee on media and publicity, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, had stated that the ongoing CVR that was being conducted by INEC was expected to end on June 30 in advance of the general elections in 2023.
