The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it has yet to make a decision on the growing number of requests for an extension of the deadline for continuous voter registration.

Some are calling for an extension of this program, which began June 30, 2020 and is set to terminate on June 30, 2022, but there has been no official response to this request. There has been an increase in the number of people registering to vote ahead of the 2023 elections, prompting calls for an extension. On May 30, 2022, the online registration for the event was closed.

There were calls from both the House of Representatives and several civil society organizations and individuals for the CVR to be extended by 60 days on Wednesday, so that more Nigerians may participate.

To ensure that all Nigerians who are eligible to vote in the 2023 general elections can register to vote, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and 185 concerned Nigerians petitioned the Federal High Court in Lagos for an order of mandamus, ordering INEC to extend voter registration by a minimum of three months and to take effective measures so that all Nigerians who are eligible can vote.

According to a notification posted on INEC’s website, registering by this deadline will help INEC clean up its database and produce a list of registered voters ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

According to INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the commission has not yet made a decision on the request. On Friday, he informed our correspondent, “INEC does not have a position yet. ” As of right now, the CVR is due on June 30th, which is just over a week away. When we arrive at the bridge, the commission will decide what to do next.”

Since the commencement of the registration process, nearly 10.2 million new registrations have been made, according to the chairman of INEC. Ones, particularly young people, have been persuaded to register and get their PVCs in numerous parts of the country and on social media.

From 2019 through 2023, it is possible that the total number of registered voters in the United States would rise from 84 million to more than 100 million.

He noted recently that the efforts of young people to register were fascinating, but that they should go beyond registering to guarantee that they obtain their PVCs and vote.

Collection of PVC

Meanwhile, the Osun State Independent National Electoral Commission says it has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards in the state ahead of the July 16 governorship election.

According to a statement from INEC’s Public Affairs Officer, Mrs Oluwaseun Osimosu, on Saturday, the decision was made so that individuals who had yet to acquire their PVCs could do so more easily.

Voters who haven’t picked up their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) can do so from June 22 to June 26 at the registration areas (wards) where they were registered.
