The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a major opposition party, has officially opened the nomination process for the party’s presidential ticket in 2023.

The PDP’s position was stated in a statement published at the conclusion of the party’s 96th NEC meeting, which took place on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at its national secretariat in Abuja.

In addition, the NEC nominated former Senate President David Mark to chair the Convention Committee ahead of the party’s National Convention to determine the party’s presidential candidate.

According to the party, “after much debate, the NEC agreed with the request of the PDP National Zoning Committee that the presidential election be postponed.” Where feasible, the party should also strive for a consensus candidate.

“NEC took note of the Zoning Committee’s advice that, in the interests of fairness and fair play, the Party make zoning decisions as soon as possible to avoid problems in the process.”

“The NEC approved the holding of the Presidential Primary (Special National Convention) to elect our Party’s Presidential Candidate on Saturday, May 28 to Sunday, May 29, 2022 in Abuja.”

“NEC authorized the formation of the National Convention Organizing Committee, as well as the appointment of His Excellency Senator David Mark as Chairman, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as Deputy Chairman, and His Excellency Barr. Ibrahim Shema as Secretary.”

“NEC guarantees open, fair, credible, and transparent processes for the selection of our Party’s Candidates for all elected offices in the 2023 general elections.”
