Section 84(8) of the Constitution was amended by the National Assembly to allow statutory delegates to vote in primary elections.

House of Representatives member to introduce resolution to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s inactivity on Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act on Thursday.

Mr. Buhari’s refusal to approve the modified election bill necessitated a constitutional point of order from Ben Igbakpa (PDP, Delta).

Section 84(8) of the Constitution was amended by the National Assembly to allow statutory delegates to vote in primary elections. The law was approved by the Senate on May 10 and the House on May 11. Although the measure has yet to be signed by Mr. Buhari, it is expected to become law.

Additionally, the Nigerian president thanked Tinubu and praised the delegations for making the “correct decision.”
Candidates for all offices had to be selected by elected delegates in the primaries for most parties.

During the debate, Mr Igbakpa urged his colleagues and the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, to veto President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr. Gbajabiamila instructed the legislator to file a substantive motion on Thursday in his ruling, which the lawmaker did.

Speculation is afoot…
