The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has stated that the domestic runway at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos will be closed for three months to allow for maintenance and the installation of Air Field Lighting.
International and domestic flights will utilize the international runway (18R/36L) for landing and takeoff throughout the next three months.
Wednesday’s statement from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, headed Airfield lighting installation: FAAN will close domestic runway 18L/36R, confirmed the closure.
As part of its efforts to improve the safety and efficiency of flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has made arrangements to install a CAT III airfield ground lighting system on runway 18L/36R. The duration of the project, which will begin on July 8, 2022, is anticipated to be 90 days.
“As a result, Runway 18L/36R will be closed at this period. Note, however, that there will be no disruptions. All routine flight operations will utilize the 18R/36L runway. The corresponding NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has already been published and circulated.”
FAAN’s acting general manager for corporate affairs, Mrs. Faithful A. Hope-Ivbaze, issued the statement.
On Tuesday, FAAN reportedly conducted a conference with airline operators in which the timeline and procedures were explained.
However, airline operators and industry watchers have indicated that flights may see minor delays over the period.
