Kuje Prison Break: Crime has Become Pervasive In Nigeria -US Embassy Warn Citizens

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned its nationals from travelling on the Abuja airport route.

The warning was issued after suspected terrorists attacked and escaped inmates from Kuje jail on Tuesday.

In a statement headlined “Abuja FCT jail break near the airport on July 5, 2022,” the US Embassy stated on Wednesday that crime has become pervasive in Nigeria.

The announcement added, “On the evening of July 5, 2022, an assault on Kuje Prison resulted in the release of the majority of the prison’s estimated 1,000 inmates. Approximately 27 miles southwest of the Central Business District is the location of the penitentiary.

“An upsurge in crime is anticipated in Abuja and its environs. For the next two weeks, it is advised that U.S. citizens maintain a high level of personal security awareness and avoid needless travel on the airport road.

“Crime is pervasive throughout Nigeria and tends to increase at night. Avoiding places and circumstances that increase the possibility of victimization is the most effective defence. Avoid displaying valuables and minimize your activities at night.

“Terrorist organisations and those inspired by them are determined to target American civilians abroad. Terrorists increasingly employ less complex methods of attack, such as knives, weapons, and cars, to more efficiently target crowds. Frequently, they target unprotected or vulnerable targets, including:

“High-visibility public events (sporting competitions, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday gatherings, etc.), hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by visitors, places of worship, schools, parks, retail malls and markets, and public transportation networks” (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights).

“Actions to take: Be aware of your surroundings, maintain a low profile, carry proper identification, monitor local media for updates, review your personal security plans, always drive with your windows rolled up and your doors locked, and avoid large gatherings and protests, review alternative travel routes in case of unexpected protests or unrest, exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings, and always keep your residence locked.”
