Former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman Chief Vincent Ogbulafor has passed away.

It was reported that the 73-year-old prince of Umuahia had made headlines for predicting that the main opposition party would remain in power for 60 years.

Those close to him say he passed away quietly on Friday morning.

“Last night we lost Dede Ukwu, the Honorable Vin. Ogbulafor. He passed away in Canada, a grieving relative reported late last week.

During his time as PDP scribe and later Chairman, Ogbulafor was extremely influential due in large part to his penchant for making statements that polarized opinion.

Chief Vincent Ogbulafor KSM actually passed away at the young age of 73 this morning in Canada. Chief Goddy Uwazurike, a lawyer and close friend of the deceased, said, “The Royal Family of Ogbulafor will announce a date for the burial ceremonies, which will most likely take place next year.”

The family looked to him as the patriarch. The Lord, please grant him eternal rest. “May eternal light shine on him,” Uwazurike prayed.

Ogbulafor took office as national chairman of the PDP on March 8, 2008, and he immediately caused controversy by saying he was unconcerned about Nigeria becoming a one-party state.

The former PDP chairman stated, “I don’t intend to speak longer than this,” during an interactive session with media executives at the Sheraton Hotel in Abuja’s Banquet Hall. I hope that I have adequately addressed the issues and party politics of our great party, and I look forward to the day when every Nigerian is once again a proud member of the PDP. If Nigeria is taken over by one party, I couldn’t care less. We will know we have done a good job if we are able to unite all of the states in the federation.
