Chelsea 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, putting Arsenal within a point of them in the race for third place if they win on Sunday.

The Blues had two shots on goal in the first period, but Timo Werner’s was disallowed for a foul on Romain Saiss and Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s ruled out for offside.

Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring from the spot after winning a penalty, then added a quick second.

However, late goals from Francisco Trincao and Conor Coady forced them to settle for a draw.

They will also be worried by how easy it was for Wolves to counter at points. There will be frustration around Chelsea’s contribution to Wolves’ first goal and their inability to see out the game.

Chelsea established themselves early in the game by controlling the play. Even if the goals were ruled off, the fact that they had the ball in the net twice before the interval demonstrates that they were capable of opening up Wolves’ defense. Despite appearing stretched at times, the defense did enough to keep Edouard Mendy from having to do much for long stretches. The fact that they scored two goals so fast in the second period will be quite encouraging.
Chelsea’s performance was plodding at moments in the first half, and the hosts also exhibited a lack of imagination. Many set pieces were entirely squandered before halftime, and the second ruled-out goal demonstrated a lack of confidence.
