Thursday, officials from the European Union mourned the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch of the United Kingdom throughout the country’s entire membership and subsequent withdrawal from the EU.
EU Council President Charles Michel tweeted, “Once called ‘Elizabeth the Steadfast,’ she never failed to remind us the importance of lasting ideals in a modern society via her service and commitment.”
After the news of the queen’s death was disclosed on Thursday, Prime Minister Liz Truss praised King Charles III and urged the British people to “come together as a community to support him.”
She said, “Today the crown passes, as it has for more than a thousand years, to our new monarch, our new head of state, His Majesty King Charles III,” adding, “We must come together as a people to support him, to help him bear the awesome responsibility that he now carries for us all.”
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki described Queen Elizabeth II as a “icon” and said it was an honor to have met her on Thursday.

In his first public address as King of Great Britain on Thursday, Charles III called Queen Elizabeth II a “cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother” who will be sorely missed.
To quote Charles: “I know her loss will be greatly felt throughout the country, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.” Her death was “a moment of the greatest anguish for me and all members of my family.”
Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of Scotland and an advocate for Scottish independence from the rest of Britain, called the queen’s death “a profoundly sad time for the UK, the Commonwealth, and the world” on Thursday.
Sturgeon wrote, “On behalf of the people of Scotland, I extend my heartfelt condolences to The King and the Royal Family. Her life was one of great commitment and service.”
