To pay homage to Queen Elizabeth II, the English Premier League has decided to cancel all games scheduled for this weekend.
On Thursday, after 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96.
In a statement released on Friday, the Premier League announced that this weekend’s round of games would be postponed out of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“Premier League teams paid respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during a meeting this morning,” the statement stated.
All Premier League games scheduled for this weekend, including Monday night’s, have been postponed out of respect for her exceptional life and contributions to the nation.
“We and our clubs would like to pay respect to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country,” Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said.
She was our longest-reigning monarch, and her life of service has left a remarkable legacy.

The statement claims that the decision is consistent with how The FA and EFL would handle this weekend’s contests.
There would be “more updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of grief to be communicated in due course,” the statement said.
