Adijat Olarinoye won gold in the women’s weightlifting event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, earning Nigeria its first medal.

Women’s 55kg Weightlifting champion Adijat Olarinoye lifted a games-record 203 pounds in the finals.

Olarinoye triumphed over a field of ten competitors to win the competition.

Bindyarani Sorokhaibam of India finished second, while Fraer Morrow of England came in third.

Olarinoye lifted a total of 203 kilograms in the snatch and the clean and jerk, which earned her the gold medal.

As a result of Olarinoye’s performance, Nigeria now holds a share of the ninth place in the medal standings.

Nigeria’s men’s table tennis team qualified for the quarterfinals earlier in the day by defeating Cyprus in their final group match.

The team led by Quadri Aruna will now face Malaysia on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Boxer Abdul-Afeez Osoba knocked out Carl Hield of the Bahamas in the first round to advance to the second round of the men’s light middleweight.

Bolanle Shogbamu, on the other hand, was beaten by hometown favorite Jodie Wilkinson in the women’s light middleweight division.
