The Confederation of African Football made the announcement late on Sunday night that an African Super League would begin to play in 2023 with a prize pool of one hundred million dollars. The league would consist of the best clubs on the African continent.
There is currently no information available on the number of competitors that will take part in the competition that is scheduled to take place concurrently with the flagship Champions League on the continent.
The CAF has stated that the Super League will “breathe fresh life into African club competition.” The official debut of the Super League will take place in August in Tanzania, during the meeting of the continent’s governing body.
The declaration was made after the CAF’s 54 member associations decided to move through with the competition by a vote of 100 percent last year.
“The number of potential investors and sponsors who are interested in working with us on the CAF Super League has been overwhelming. It has a tremendous potential to considerably advance African football and make it even more dominant “said CAF president Patrice Motsepe in a statement.
“A large portion of the money that is made from the CAF Super League will be invested back into African football. As part of this process, CAF will give one million dollars annually to each of its 54 Member Associations as a commitment to the development of football and young football.”
