The Nigerian Army has arrested Popular Nollywood Actor Chiwetalu Agu for allegedly trying to woe the public to join the call of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IBOP) on Thursday.
This is according to a statement by The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who said the Nollywood actor, allegedly wore a very well known cloth that portray the IPOB and such is viewed as attempting to lure the public to support the group.
“More worrisome, was the fact that considering the prevailing security situation of the region, coupled with the ongoing Exercise Golden Dawn, his action could be a tacit endorsement and support for the proscribed group,” He said.
Onyema said that the Nigerian Army is fully aware of Citizens rights to freedom of movement and expression but not to the detriment of the peace of the nation.
“It is, therefore, pertinent to state that while exercising such freedoms, it must be done within the confines of the law, bearing in mind the imperative for peace, and national security.
He also stressed that the IPOB remains proscribed as a way of clearification.
“For the avoidance of doubt and emphasis, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) remains proscribed.
He further noted that although Chiwetalu tried to resist the Army during his arrest but he was never brutalized as to the rumours flying around.
