The International communities have begun to worry about the level of abduction of school children in the Northern part of Nigeria.
Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mr Karim Khan has sought authorization from the Court to open an investigation into the Kidnapping of school children in Nigeria following a petition by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), to the court.
The rate of Kidnapping in Nigeria recent has become extremely worrisome especially in the South East and Northern regions of the Country. School children have been most affected as there are countless records of students abducted from their school hostels and classrooms.
A report by SBM Intelligence reveals that between the first six months of the year 2021, about 2,371 people have been kidnapped in a country in which an average of 13 persons are Kidnapped daily in the country. You can now imagine the figure year 2021 has recorded till date.
According to Khan, the closure of schools, and the failure of Nigerian authorities at the federal and state levels to find a Iasting solution will be probed.
During the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76), on the sidelines the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami was quoted as saying terrorism and Kidnapping financiers have been identified in Nigeria while some “high profile individuals” have been detained.
In a televised interview of Channels Television programme “politics today” the special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said that Nigeria is not interested in naming and shaming terrorism financiers.
“Naming and shaming will not be the motive, bringing malefactors to justice will be it,” he said. “Nigeria is not interested in naming and shaming anybody. Rather, it wants to bring them to justice”, Adesina said.
He added that,
“You will see that the United Arab Emirates has given some names and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) has reacted to that matter, saying that in due course, all these people will have their dates in court. Rest assured that these people will be dragged before justice and justice will have its way.”
