The new chairman of Chelsea, Todd Boehly, proposed a North vs. South all-star game in the style of the American Premier League.
The new co-owner of the Blues has already brought up the notion to his Premier League colleagues, according to a conference he attended in New York. The new co-owner also holds stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The greatest players from each conference in Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association play an exhibition game to showcase their talents.
Boehly proposed using the proceeds to redistribute more money from the sport’s apex to its grassroots.
Boehly remarked, “People are talking about more money for the pyramid, at the MLB All-Star game this year we made 200 million dollars” (£171 million).
“So we’re thinking that the Premier League, for whatever the pyramid requires, could quite simply have a north vs south all-star game.”
While speaking at the SALT thought leaders conference, Boehly revealed that Chelsea had fired Thomas Tuchel.
Last week, after a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb, Chelsea fired Tuchel, who had taken the club to the Champions League in 2021.
Tuchel’s replacement, Graham Potter, has been named, and Boehly seems to be hinting at a rift in his relationship with the German coach.
Boehly chimed in, “When you take over any business, you have to make sure you’re aligned with the individuals that are operating the business.
“Although Tuchel’s talent and achievements at Chelsea are undeniable, our club’s long-term goal was to hire a coach or manager who was eager to work closely with the coaching staff.
“Instead of focusing on Zagreb, we were united in our goals for what Chelsea should be like.
This choice “wasn’t made because of a single win or loss, but rather because we thought it was the appropriate vision for the club.”
Boehly further revealed that Chelsea would operate under a multi-club structure, much like Manchester City’s owner, the City Football Group.
He promised that “we will be consistently expanding resources.”
I’d love to expand the club’s reach and we’ve discussed the possibility of having many locations.
