After thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 away at Deutsche Bank Park on Friday, Bayern Munich began their quest for an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.
An early goal from Sadio Mane on his league debut saw the former Liverpool striker get the better of Kevin Trapp.
After losing Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona in the summer, there were concerns that Bayern Munich would be lacking in offensive firepower after the Senegalese scored five goals in as many games for Munich.
The Bavarians’ other scorers included Joshua Kimmich, Benjamin Pavard, Jamal Musiala (two), and Serge Gnabry.
To make matters worse for Trapp, who was likely dazzled by the pyrotechnics of his own fans, Kimmich scored a free kick in the fifth minute that deflected in off the post and past the helpless goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, French defender Pavard scored with a volley that looked a lot like his goal of the tournament in the 2018 World Cup against Argentina.
In spite of the early onslaught, the home team had the better chances in the second half, and they took advantage of both of them.
Soon after Pavard’s goal, Tuta hit the crossbar with a header. Midfielder Jesper Lindstrom beat several Munich defenders and had goalkeeper Manuel Neuer beat before shooting wide left of the left post in the 27th minute.
Bayern’s third goal, a header from Mane past Trapp, gave Munich the lead back and stifled Frankfurt’s momentum.
Musiala scored from close range after Thomas Mueller dribbled in a cross from the right wing and was named the game’s man of the match in Bayern’s 5-3 Super Cup victory over Leipzig.
Gnabry scored in the 43rd minute to put Bayern up 5-0 at the break after signing a new contract that will keep him in Munich until at least 2026.
Coach Oliver Glasner made three half-time substitutions to improve Frankfurt’s defensive stability and save face ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Randal Kolo Muani, one of the substitutes who came on at half-time, scored on his Eagles debut in the 64th minute.
After Neuer lost control of the ball after straying too far outside the Munich box, the France U21 international slid the ball into an empty net.
In the 83rd minute, Musiala doubled his tally by beating several worn-out Frankfurt defenders and putting the ball past Trapp from close range.
Bayern Munich’s 8-0 thrashing of Schalke in the opening round of the 2020 Bundesliga season appeared to be on course to break their own record for the best performance in an opening round encounter, which was achieved in the same season when the Royal Blues were demoted.
