The longest-reigning monarch in British history and a global icon, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace announced.
Following centuries of tradition, her eldest son, Charles, at the age of 73, will instantly become king. This will mark the beginning of a new, less stable era for the British royal family following the queen’s unprecedented 70-year reign.
