The Senate has confirmed seven of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees for cabinet positions.

They were confirmed on Wednesday following a screening in the National Assembly‘s upper chamber. The exercise was presided over by Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

The occurrence occurred days after President Buhari named the ministerial nominees and sent a letter to the Senate requesting their confirmation.

Four of the newly confirmed ministers hail from four south-east states, while one each hails from the north-west, the south-west, and the south-south.

Henry Ikechukwu – Abia State, Umana Okon Umana – Akwa-Ibom State, Ekuma Joseph – Ebonyi State, Goodluck Nana Obia – Imo State, Umar Ibrahim Yakub – Kano State, Ademola Adewole Adegorioye – Ondo State, and Odo Udi – Rivers State are among the newly appointed officials.

They were named following the resignation of several cabinet members who left their seats to run for elective offices in the recently finished All Progressives Congress primaries (APC).

Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State; Godswill Akpabio, the former governor of Akwa Ibom; Ogbonnaya Onu, and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba were among the ministers that resigned to run for the APC presidential nomination, which none of them won.

According to Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, “no political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the nomination of candidates for any election.”
