On Tuesday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde demanded that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu resign in order for the party to embody the unity it preaches.

Speaking at a PDP South-West Stakeholders Forum in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Makinde stated that the party’s national leadership should reflect its rhetoric of togetherness.

Members of the PDP in the South West, he stated, believe “if we claim we want to unify Nigeria, we must unify PDP first; the faces in our party must reflect national unity.”

Makinde was reiterating the stance taken by himself and other governors such as Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, who have claimed that the party is biased in favor of one region over another and have frequently asked for redress.

He suggested the party’s presidential nominee should convince the national chairman to step down so that a southerner could take his place and better represent the PDP’s message of national unity.
